North Georgia Cabin Rental

David and Jan Flynn

We live in Panama City Beach, Florida and let me tell you how we found
"The Appalachian"

Our family had planned a trip to Key West for a 2004 Christmas Holiday but, at the last minute on a summer afternoon my brother-in-law Steve came over and changed everything. He had come across another idea: “Let’s all go to Amicalola Falls in north Georgia” he suggested. At first we were reluctant, we were well into our Key West plans. Steve continued to explain what a beautiful area Amicalola Falls is and how we might enjoy the relaxing surrounding of the Appalachian Mountains with their hiking trails and extensive forest of birch, oak and beech. He insisted that it is the southeast’s greatest vacationland, a Mecca for Fall “leaf lookers,” campers and hikers alike. “We’ll drive past quaint farms, lovely trees and running streams. The Appalachian people are very kind, down-to-earth people. The Appalachian Mountains are a perfect place for a relaxing vacation. We can enjoy the fresh, clean air and see the true beauty of North America.” he said.

So, we all sat down at the computer and decided to do a search for “Amicalola Falls” and “Pet Friendly”. One of the most promising results was www.whisperingwindsretreat.com. “This looks like a nice place” Steve said “What do you think?” Well it’s near Harper Creek, it has a nice pond nearby, a deep forest and it is pet friendly “Let’s give it a try” I replied.

We made arrangements online to stay in a log cabin near the town of Ellijay. Jan and I got reservations for a cabin called “The Appalachian.” Everything was so simple and worked out just as we expected. We arrived in the Appalachian Mountains on Christmas Eve and we pretty much just fell in love with our cabin choice “The Appalachian.” The owner, Dave, and several of his dogs greeted us at the foot of the hill that leads to the cabin. He had a big smile and polite, easy conversation. We followed him up the winding road to the cabin location and he made sure everything was in place, and that we were happy with everything. We were very happy as a matter of fact! I realized right then and there how much I appreciated Steve’s suggestion for a change of vacation plans. There was no way Key West could offer anything like the Appalachian Mountains on Christmas Eve.

When my wife Jan and I reminisce back on our first vacation at “The Appalachian” we think of it as nothing short of a second honeymoon. I won’t say we spent all of our time snuggled up in the bed, the hot tub or in front of the cozy fireplace but, I can tell you we spent a lot of our time those places. Something about that fresh Georgia air seems to bring out the best in romance. When we had time to take advantage of other activities, we would go hiking, fishing, take in the sights and carry on pleasant conversations with the locals. It has to this day been one of our fondest memories.

On the last day of that Christmas holiday Mr. Dave came calling with fresh hot biscuits and maple syrup and his dogs tagging along. We stepped out on the front porch for a hot cup of joe and Mr. Dave and I began to speak. “Mr. Dave has anyone ever offered to buy this cabin from you?” I ask him. I think I heard his dogs snicker. “Well” he said “Near ‘bout everyone that spends time at the ‘The Appalachian’ wants to buy her.” “Well Mr. Dave if you ever consider selling the place please give me a call” I told him. Mr. Dave said, "I’ll keeps you in my mind.”

A year came and went but, no call from Dave. As time went on, Jan and I rented other cabins around Appalachian Mountains. They were nice, they had all the amenities and we had a good time. But you know what? It just didn’t have the same “getting away from it all” feel. A couple of years later, we were still looking to buy a cabin we could call our own. Then one day I was searching the internet for property and I came across a cabin that looked just like “The Appalachian.” I called Mr. Dave and ask him if he had decided to sell her. He thought for a moment and said  "I believe I have.” Once I got the realtor information from him, I was off like a flash. There was competition but, in March of 2006 our bid was accepted and Jan and I closed on “The Appalachian” and got the vacation home of our dreams. We hope you will enjoy “The Appalachian” as much as we do. By the way . . . “The Appalachian” is not for sell!!!
